Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines (2003)
Director: Jonathan Mostow
review by Michael Lohr
T3 is a slightly campy, somewhat scaled back version of the Terminator series compared to James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day or the original movie that spawned the sequels, but it still packs a serious punch, albeit an unnecessary one. Thank big screen acting rookie Kristanna Loken for that. She is incredible as the villain terminatrix cyborg. As the wicked T-X cyborg, she can bend her legs in ways that would make you breathless and she could even enlarge her breasts as a method of seduction.
The movie opens with the world about to end, Skynet finds its AI groove and quickly decides that it creators should be exterminated (maybe it decided that America's plastic, façade culture with Walmarts on every street corner was too painful to endure). Schwarzenegger and Loken basically beat the hell out of each other throughout the movie (should do wonders for opposite sex relations - kind of reminds me of those loudmouth, gun-wielding, alcoholic trailer trash neighbors down the street, on a summer Texas Saturday night).
Visually, there is much destruction to behold. There is so much gunplay, death and violence in this movie that it almost seems like a desensitising training film for special operations forces. The celluloid brutality displayed here is almost unparalleled. This all leads up to a very flat and unfulfilling conclusion.
Rumour has it that Arnold Schwarzenegger will be entering politics and running for the governor's seat of the state of California. This is a shame, because T3 is not the movie I wanted him to do for his cinematic adieu. Like many people, I've been waiting years for Schwarzenegger to do Conan The King, this is a sequel that needs to be made. T3 was not needed.
