Underworld (2003)
Director: Len Wiseman

review by Michael Lohr

Vampires and werewolves are sworn enemies and a war has been raging for centuries. Selene (Kate Beckinsale) is a death dealer, assigned to hunt down and eradicate the last of the Lycan. Things change. Selene, who's famous for her unyielding strength, relentless drive and werewolf-hunting prowess, falls in love with a peace-loving human, Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman), who wants to end the war and possesses a secret that will do just that. What is a poor girl to do? Continue to kick arse and take names, that's what.
Underworld is a spellbinding dark fantasy film, loaded with all things Gothic and filled with bloody battles between vampires and werewolves. It is a first-rate film, but it might be enough for male filmgoers that Kate Beckinsale prances around in what must be the sexiest, tightest, leather S&M suit ever seen on celluloid. Not even Carrie-Anne Moss' Matrix outfits can touch it. Underworld echoes the quality cool vibe of Aliens, Blade and Dark City but is a hell of a lot sexier.
First-time director Len Wiseman has done an excellent job. His background as an art director on Stargate and Independence Day has helped him capture the story's sombre mood very well. Underworld is mythic and dark. It feels like a Neil Gaiman graphic novel put on the big screen.
If you have not seen this movie yet, then go do so. It is indeed good stuff.
